Switching elements in safety switches

S880 subminiature switches perform the electromechanical switching function in safety switches.

Safety switches monitor the position of movable guards for machinery and equipment. For example, a protective grille prevents an operator from reaching into a press mould. Or a robot is immobilised while the key is still in the safety door. They combine a safety switch, guard lock function and key transfer in one system.

What tasks do Schaltbau microswitches perform?

The S880 microswitch provides the electromechanical switching function in the safety switch. If the machine operator opens the safety guard, this actuates the S880. It opens the safety circuit, and the controller prevents the machine from starting.

Why was the S880 chosen?

The S880 is the world’s smallest microswitch with positive opening operation and self-cleaning contacts. The version with PCB terminals can be directly integrated into the compact housing of Dold switching devices. Here is an overview of the crucial characteristics:

  • Housing dimensions: 20 × 9.3 × 6.6 mm (L x H x W)
  • PCB terminals: integration into compact devices
  • Mechanical positive opening operation in accordance with DIN EN 60947-5-1, Annex K
  • Self-cleaning contacts
