Schaltbau GmbH, a leading international supplier of safety components and systems for DC technology has been nominated to supply its new C801 high-voltage contactor for the new BEV platform of a German premium car manufacturer with production to start at the end of 2024. The series production order with a duration of several years and a volume in the tens of millions is evidence of the successful positioning of Schaltbau as an automotive supplier for battery electrical vehicles (“BEVs”).
The C801 contactor is used as an interlocking contactor in the battery box (battery disconnect unit/junction box) of the 800V platform and is notable for its high current carrying capacity and high energy efficiency. It also features a patented mechanical interlock system that prevents short-circuiting of the battery units even in the event of extreme shocks of up to 120g/20ms, thus delivering greater safety for the vehicle and its occupants.
The contactor is being produced in Schaltbau’s NExT Factory in Velden, Bavaria. The flexible, automated production plant and the modular design of many Schaltbau components mean rapid scaling up of production is possible, and that parts can be made quickly available, even for custom requirements. Thanks to its innovative power supply concept, production at the NExT Factory is very nearly carbon neutral and highly energy efficient. Thus, it is not only a best-practice example of green manufacturing, but it also supports BEV manufactur-ers in reducing their carbon footprint and dependence on Asia for battery production.
Founded in Munich in 1929 as a developer and manufacturer of contactors for the railway industry, today Schaltbau GmbH is a globally active innovative and growing company for safety and security solutions in the energy, industrial, mobility and rail sectors. From a technology point of view, the products and turnkey solutions are within the direct current sector, and are making an important contribution to the energy revolution.
